Vertical Drama Videos FAQ Micro Drama Roundup

Stage One: The Story Often Comes Before the Script

By the time anyone calls “action” on a short drama set, somebody has already worked out which story is worth the bet. Tracing a few hits backward often reveals a book at the start of the pipeline. ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance centered on a secret child, is based on the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport. On November 1, 2025, ReelShort debuted Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series adapted from a novel by Cora Reilly. In Korea, the 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, which carries a 19+ age rating, is based on a web novel and webtoon. A number of app owners also run reading businesses, which keeps source material close at hand: Holywater vertical drama free runs the books app My Passion, Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. If there is no book to draw on, writers turn to tested tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. The script has one job: to squeeze a long drama story into scenes that each land a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.

Stage Two: Familiar Faces in the Cast

Casting is where the format’s economics come into view on screen. The same names keep turning up if you browse the cast lists for short series on IMDb. Noah Fearnley came back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star, after headlining ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024. On GoodShort in 2025, Rosa Singerman led both Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, starring opposite Franky Cammarata in the latter. Leads with a following on one app arrive at the next title with a head start, and that matters a great deal when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women, so producers are also casting with a particular viewer in mind. DramaBox has a production team in Los Angeles.

Stage Three: Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days

According to TheWrap, a Western short drama usually costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is shot in eight to ten days. Wikipedia’s overview of the format is similar, placing $150,000 to $250,000 on a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes. If a 70-episode series is shot in eight days, the arithmetic comes to close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Chinese producers selling overseas have reported lower numbers still. Jiuzhou Culture put a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. That equals roughly $1,400 to $2,100 per finished episode. Of the more than 600 titles it had produced for overseas markets, Jiuzhou also reported, about 80 percent were dubbed Chinese adaptations and 20 percent were original overseas productions. Dubbing lets a studio reuse a finished domestic series, so the pricey shoot happens only once.

Stage Four: Editing Down to 60–100 Seconds

Composed vertically at 9:16 for a phone, the footage is sliced into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the edit suite. With room for a turn or two of plot at that length, each episode is structured around a question the next episode promises to answer. The mechanism that pulls you from one installment to the next is the cliffhanger, and it is the house style. Put those segments together and a 70-episode series comes to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. On GoodShort’s official pages, My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen is listed with 30 episodes and The Dragon King’s Return shows 100 episodes; episode counts vary widely by title. Because ReelShort also maintains official channels on TikTok, YouTube and Dailymotion, the same footage can reach viewers who never open the app. Editors, in other words, are editing video dramas for multiple screens at once.

Stage Five: Placing the Paywall

The last creative decision turns out to be a commercial one as well. Free viewing covers the first eight to ten episodes in the standard model TheWrap describes. ReelShort’s own blog puts its free run at usually five to 15 episodes, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. From then on, episodes unlock with coins; ReelShort’s blog gives the standard cost of an episode as about 60 coins. You can also earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog, or buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews on its own. Since prices differ by country, platform and promotion, your store may show something different. Paywalls falling right on a cliffhanger rank among the most common complaints about these apps, alongside auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs, which is why placement is the contentious part. Any coin generator or modded “unlimited coins” app promising a way around the wall is unofficial and best avoided.

Stage Six: Animation and AI-Generated Series

In the most recent production stage, the camera is removed entirely. Animated motion comics now appear alongside ReelShort’s live-action catalogue. The Lost Heir is a 58-episode family saga about Arthur Lancaster: he loses his memory rescuing his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and in the end unmasks the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape, and it lists no cast. It should not be confused with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series that shares the name. More than 80 percent of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, according to 36Kr, so the app has gone the furthest; 36Kr also reported that its annualized revenue passed $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Beyond the apps, AI video dramas have spread too, as Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island starring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely labeled it “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Production Line

Established studios have noticed; Fox Entertainment provides the clearest example. In October 2025, Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, received an equity investment from Fox. Fox also made a commitment to produce more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Fox-produced series already available on the app include Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside. Holywater secured a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital; My Drama, meanwhile, took home the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. A network-scale producer committing to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has gone from curiosity to line item.

The Production Line in Brief

Setting the stages side by side brings the logic of the business into focus. Much of the rest is arranged around the shoot, the expensive, fixed block. Casting relies on known faces, scripts tend to arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, and the edit is engineered around cliffhangers that feed a paywall. Fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, but TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. Typical time and cost at each stage are laid out in the table below, which uses only publicly reported figures. It says so rather than guessing whenever no reliable number has been published.

Stage of production Usual time / cost What happens
Source material and script No public figure A novel, web fiction or proven trope is adapted; Breaking the Ice adapts Shutout, and Bound by Honor adapts Cora Reilly’s novel
The casting stage No public number Leads are chosen, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles bypass this step
Filming 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) 50 to 70+ episodes are shot in a vertical frame
Edit Episodes running 60–100 seconds Footage is split into installments that each end on a cliffhanger
